The Mallorquines Road is a stretch of the royal way that used to join Hostalric to Girona. Initially, the inn after which the road is named is thought to have attracted people to the area to cover the demands with respect to transporting goods and travellers, as well as repairing carriages and tending to animals. From that point onwards, all kinds of people, trades and services settled along the royal way. This vitality lasted for centuries until, in the mid-20t century, the GI-555 highway was built a few metres to the north. This divested the road of its original role as a main thoroughfare for transportation, giving it its current residential appearance.<\/p>\n
For centuries, the Mallorquines Road was the only urban settlement in the area, as the rest of the population lived in farmhouses scattered sparsely across the countryside. It was not until well into the 20h century that the town of Sils surpassed it in terms of population and importance, thanks to the boom generated by the arrival of the railway, in the 1860s.<\/p>\n
It should be noted that the northern pavement of the Mallorquines Road belongs to the parish of Vallcanera, while the southern one is part of the parish of Sils. This duality proved to be very important for the local population, as it was the argument put forward by the residents of the villages of Sils and Vallcanera in the 19n century to create a single municipality and avoid being separated and engulfed by the neighbouring municipalities of Macanet de la Selva and Riudarenes, respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
