The name of this 16th-century fortified house probably indicates that it was once the property of somebody named Pon\u00e7, which later evolved into its current name, the Pon\u00e7a Tower.<\/p>\n
It is a two-story fortified house with a garret under the roof sloping to the sides, decorated with Catalan-style cornicing. The main door has a voussoired round arch, and the rest of the openings are rectangular, with lintels, jambs, and sills made from single pieces of stone. The central window is a remarkable feature, as, unlike the rest, it is late Gothic, with an ogee arch and indented with small arches. The imposts are decorated with reliefs of human heads.<\/p>\n
The most exceptional feature, however, is the tower adjoining the house on the right-hand side. The square tower has small openings, also framed by stone, and a few embrasures. There is an outstanding Renaissance-style window on the second floor, with a dust guard decorated with shells. On the lintel, there is an inscription and a date: 1566. On the top floor, there is a more modern gallery with three larger rounded arch windows in each fa\u00e7ade. The tower has a hipped roof with monk-and-nun tiles and eaves four tiles deep. The walls of both the house and the tower are plastered and painted, leaving the ends of the well-cut ashlars on view.<\/p>\n
The original tower was extended with the addition of the top gallery in 1909, when Josep Serra i Carb\u00f3 (1857-1940) bought the property with the money he had earned in Baltimore (USA), where he lived between 1906 and 1911 and produced his patented agglomerated cork that stopped gas escaping from carbonated drinks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
