This old parish church was built on the orders of Baroness Sicardis, the lady of Lloret Castle and the town itself. The church was consecrated and dedicated to Saint Romanus by the Bishop of Girona, Guillem Guifre de Cerdanya, in 1079.<\/p>\n
Centuries later, in 1522, the parish moved to the new Church of Sant Roma in Lloret, and the chapel was renamed in worship of the Virgin Mary. From that point onwards, it has been referred to by many different names, including the Old Church, the Church of the Ancient Mother of God or the Church of the Joys of the Mother of God (Mare de Deu de les Alegries, in Catalan, the church’s most common name).<\/p>\n
The current church conserves very few Romanesque features, as it was renovated in the 17t and 18t centuries and rebuilt in 1914. The rectangular chapel has a gable roof that slopes to its sides, and an adjoining bell tower on the northern side, which is also square.<\/p>\n
In 1913, the church underwent a significant refurbishment, financed by the brothers Narcis and Joan Gelats Durall, making modifications to the facade, entrance portal and the inside of the chapel. A Baroque altarpiece was also fitted and an alcove dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built in accordance with the conventions of the time, with gold leaf, Venetian stuccos and marble. Six murals were painted with reproductions of the Joyful Mysteries and the Lord’s Ascension, containing portraits of important figures of the time, including one of the patrons. In 1914, a second level was added to the bell tower, with a double window, and, in 1939, a new roof was put on the chapel, with Lombard arches.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
